INVESTING IN OUR NEXT HALF CENTURY

In July 2022, Port Muskogee announced a $58 million investment in upcoming infrastructure improvements, which will bring transformative change to the region and usher in the next 50 years of economic growth. The improvements will significantly improve safety and operational efficiency, improve resiliency to withstand significant flood events, and support continuous growth with increased multimodal throughput in the terminal area.

Based on a Waterfront Infrastructure Assessment and Resiliency Study, improvements were prioritized for various infrastructures, including facilities, utilities, equipment, waterfront structures, railways, the electrical system, and stormwater system. Notable improvements include replacing three terminal cranes, improving stormwater and security infrastructure, dock repairs and enhancements, increasing road and pedestrian accessibility and constructing a robust new 50,000 sq. ft. rail-served warehouse. Additionally, Port Muskogee has the vision to have assets that can serve the Port’s future needs and withstand weather events while supporting growth and future development for the next 50 years.

TRANSPORTATION BY WATER

The MKARNS waterway is a high-use waterbourne commerce system well-suited for shipping a variety of bulk, break-bulk and liquid cargo, including iron and steel, industrial minerals, asphalt, petroleum coke, molasses, fertilizer, grain and other agricultural products, coal and construction materials. Considering the variety of barges available and the increasing use of containerization, almost any product is suitable for transportation on this river system.

Fact: if Oklahoma’s 4.9 million tons of waterborne commerce were transported by highway it would require 195,847 more trucks on the road.

TRANSPORTATION BY RAIL

The two largest railroad carriers in North America, Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF), offer mainline service to Muskogee’s largest industrial parks, including Port Muskogee. UP’s heavily-traveled main line, connecting Chicago and Houston, goes through Muskogee, and UP’s Muskogee Yard is within a few miles of the port. UP delivers cars to the port’s marshaling yard five days a week.

Throughout its 5.5 miles of railroad in the port, the Port Muskogee Railroad provides daily service to Port Industries for Class 1 interchange, cargo transfer and storage. Throughout the Port’s 4.5-mile Midland Valley Branch Line, south of Muskogee, the Port is positioned to interchange with UP to serve industries at John T. Griffin and Southside Industrial Parks. Industrial sites are available along this rail corridor at John T. Griffin Industrial Park and Southside Industrial Park.
